5 Trends that Need To End in 2015

As a rule, I don’t regularly comment on trends or give out opinions one way or the other. Style is personal and what you make of it. Plus, there’s something to be said for keeping it positive in a field that can sometimes be overwhelmed by negativity. But reflecting on the year that was in menswear and having been a participant in the conversation for nearly two years now, I thought I’d review some of the things we might collectively want to forget about this year. So, here are five trends that need to end in 2015.

Before I get into this, I want to put something out there. How do a lot of these trends flourish? I blame the internet and social media. This may sound hypocritical since it’s the internet and social media that give me this very opportunity. But as an “influencer,” I feel an immense responsibility to you, my audience. A responsibility to be authentic, to have integrity, to produce content that expresses my point of view, my aesthetic, and that is not controlled solely by marketers and brand campaigns.

Shoes For Life

They say always spend the most money on your shoes and i totally agree. Spending as much as you can on good quality shoes is an investment that will save you money in the long run given the right care and treatment.

So you’ve spent all your hard earned cash on quality leather shoes which means you’ll have to come up with a good shoe care routine. It goes without saying if your’e buying your shoes from a reputable source then you will no doubt be given some expert shoe care tips and products to purchase.

In this post i will give you a few pointers and the products i use to keep your shoes looking tiptop. As you buy your new shoes i couldn’t recommend more than also buying good quality shoe trees. Avoid plastic ones as these give no benefit to the shoe. I use Selvyt Cedar Wood Trees.

Advanced Outerwear: The Statement Topcoat

Cold weather is coat weather. And when it comes to winter dress, nothing has a bigger impact on your style than the coat you wear. This fall and winter it’s been all about the statement topcoat. Here’s an example.

In menswear, we often use the term “statement” to mean bold, wild, or even outrageous. And while that’s certainly one interpretation, it’s not the only one. There are a variety of ways to make a statement with a topcoat that don’t require you to be an “insider” or to possess an f— you attitude.

A statement topcoat can have a large lapel, be made with an interestingly textured fabric, have a unique silhouette, a not-messing-around fur collar, or a simple repeating pattern, or just be slightly longer than 3/4 length.

The one I’m wearing, like my quilted topcoat, is from Montezemolo. One of my new favorite brands. Obviously easy to dress up, but works just as well in a casual context.

20 BEST MEN’S JACKETS FOR THE SMART, CASUAL & ADVENTUROUS

With summer here in Australia jackets are likely the last thing on your mind, but beside all the surf and sun that’s currently occupying most of your mental space, make room for thoughts of cooler times ahead. One day in the not-distant-enough future, it will be time for your arms to retreat into sleeves and bid their tan a fond farewell. When that day comes, you want to be prepared.

3 Ways to Amp Up Your Suit Game feat. Cory Sylvester

The baseball player, turned actor, turned clothier is now the man in charge of measuring & fitting at one of NYC’s premiere custom menswear shops; Michael Andrews Bespoke. I have to respect Cory’s hustle since I was his predecessor in that position (before AofS I apprenticed under Michael; learning the ins-and-outs of the tailoring business while simultaneously working-off my bespoke suit balance).

When your job is making guys look their best in tailoredwear, you learn how to wear a suit with ease, comfort, and confidence.

Here Cory shows us a few ways to take your suit game to the next level.

MICRO PATTERNS

Pattern-mixing doesn’t have to be all bold and in-your-face.

Try shrinking down your patterns for effect, like this micro shadow plaid on tight polka dot.
